My adaptation of Henry James’s novella Turn of the Screw has had a rehearsed reading in London. This new four-hander adaptation of James’ classic ghost story will be produced by Dermot McLaughlin in 2017/2018. The rehearsed reading in January was an opportunity for a few producers to hear the script for the first time and raise interest in it. Sarah Woodward starred as the Governess and Jonathan O’Boyle directed. Turn of the Screw, Henry James’s late Victorian story, deals with sexual taboos and elements of evil in a way that was psychologically way ahead of its time. As the adaptor, my task was to retain as much of the ambiguity from the original as possible. Not easy on the stage where something either is or isn’t!
