My new adaptation of Jane Austen’s Emma marks the bicentennial of Austen’s death with a UK tour in 2017. It’s my fourth Austen adaptation (after Northanger Abbey, Persuasion and Mansfield Park) and its first production will open in Leatherhead on 26th May. The production will then play for a week at the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre in Guildford (30th May – 3rd June), Theatre Royal, Bath (5th – 10th June), Oxford Playhouse (21st – 24th June), Festival Theatre Malvern (26th June – 1st July) and Cambridge Arts Theatre (4th – 8th July). Austen’s comedy about Emma Woodhouse’s matchmaking schemes and her attempt to avoid love is a tremendous romp (it’s considered her masterpiece by many) and migrates beautifully onto the stage. I’ve adapted it for 7 actors. Colin Blumenau will direct its premiere production. Colin directed tours of my adaptation of Mansfield Park in 2012 and 2013 and did a brilliant job, so I’m delighted to entrust Emma to him.
