Artist Descending A Staircase

Location: Duke of Yorks Theatre. London, and Helen Hayes Theatre, New York

Date: 1989 - 90

Artist Descending a Staircase started out as a radio play by Tom Stoppard. It hardly needed adapting at all to work as a stage play. Dan Crawford at the Kings Head persuaded me to direct it soon after the success of our Easy Virtue venture together.

With an amazing cast, including Sarah Woodward, Frank Middlemas, John Warnaby and Peter Copley, the show was such a success that after its run at the Kings Head, it transferred to the West End where it ran for half a year. Then, thanks to Dan and Tom’s loyalty, I directed a production of it on Broadway with an American cast and an American creative team. It ran at the Helen Hayes Theatre.

Tim Luscombe’s production is a theatrical bolt from the blue…with its romantic atmospheres…always controlled
