This week saw the start of rehearsals for Stiletto, the musical show I wrote with Matthew Wilder, set in Venice in 1730 about a castrato’s search for meaning and love in a world only interested in exploiting him. Matthew wrote the music and lyrics. I came up with the story and wrote the book. It’s been an amazing process, in which I've learned so much about writing for musicals.
Now we’re in rehearsals, and the show’s coming alive, I'm finally able to see what we’ve created. Matthew’s music is already soaring. The voices we’ve got in the show are incredible. Yesterday, the opening scene was tackled for the first time, and I got to see director David Gilmore interpret what I meant by ‘a dried cod seller and a trickster lurk in the shadows’. We were shown the model for the set – gold and black, full of threat and glory. The team is impressive and everyone’s working their socks off.
Really hope to see you there.
